1. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
The clear, warm waters surrounding Gili Air are teeming with marine life, making snorkeling and scuba diving prime activities. One can easily spot sea turtles, colorful fish, and vibrant coral reefs, with dedicated spots like Turtle Point. For those new to diving, introductory experiences are available, while certified divers have access to numerous sites with visibility up to 30 meters. Snorkeling directly from the shore is possible, especially on the east and northeast coastlines; planning around high tide is advisable to avoid walking on corals. Joining a boat tour provides access to various snorkeling spots around all three Gili Islands, including the famous underwater statues near Gili Meno.
Cost: Snorkeling gear rental: Around IDR 50,000 (approximately USD 3-4) per day for a mask, snorkel, and fins. Shared snorkeling boat trips (3-5 hours, 3 islands): From IDR 150,000 to IDR 250,000 (approximately USD 10-17) per person. Private snorkeling tours are also available, with prices starting from around IDR 2,500,000 (approximately USD 160) for a full day for a group. Fun dives for certified divers: Approximately IDR 545,000 - IDR 700,000 (approximately USD 35-45) per dive. PADI Discover Scuba Diving (introductory dive): Around IDR 995,000 (approximately USD 65). PADI Open Water Course (certification): Approximately IDR 5,975,000 (approximately USD 380-400). Marine park fees (approximately IDR 100,000 per diver) may be extra.
Transport: Snorkeling from shore is within walking distance from many accommodations. Organized boat tours typically depart from the main harbor area or offer pick-up from beachfront accommodations. Dive centers are located throughout the island and often arrange boat transport to dive sites.
