Getting There and Away

Hiriketiya is primarily accessed via the nearby town of Dickwella, with Wewrukannala serving as the closest train station and Matara acting as a major bus hub for connections from various parts of Sri Lanka.

By Train:

Take a direct train from Colombo Fort Station to Wewrukannala, which typically takes around 4-5 hours and costs between LKR 340 and LKR 1,500. From Wewrukannala, a tuk-tuk ride to Hiriketiya takes about 10 minutes and can cost between LKR 300 and LKR 2,000, while a taxi may cost between LKR 900 and LKR 6,000.

By Bus (from Colombo):

  • Express Highway Bus:: Depart from Colombo Makumbura Multimodal Centre to Matara. This express service takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs around LKR 3,000.
  • Local Bus:: From Colombo Fort Bus Station, take a public bus to Matara, a journey that typically lasts about 3 hours and costs LKR 400-600.
  • From Matara to Hiriketiya/Dickwella:: From Matara, you can take a local bus for 30-45 minutes (less than LKR 400), a tuk-tuk for 30-45 minutes (LKR 2,000-4,000), or a taxi for about 35 minutes (LKR 5,500-6,000).

By Taxi/Private Car (from Colombo):

A private taxi offers the fastest and most comfortable option, taking approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes and costing between LKR 20,000 and LKR 30,000. Taxis can be arranged through the PickMe app or via accommodation providers.
