Navigating Sri Lanka is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.

Inter-City Travel

Traveling between cities in Sri Lanka offers a range of options, varying in cost and comfort. Buses are the most affordable and widespread, covering even remote areas. Government-owned (SLTB) buses are typically red and often lack air conditioning, while private buses, in various colors, may offer air conditioning and be more crowded.

Bus fares are very cheap; for example, a journey from Colombo to Jaffna in third class costs around Rs. 335 (approximately $1.10 USD), while a first-class berth on the same route costs about Rs. 1100 (approximately $3.60 USD).

Trains provide a more relaxed and scenic travel experience, particularly through the hill country. Fares are generally inexpensive, slightly higher than buses. For example, a train ride from Kandy to Ella can start from around $13 USD, and Kandy to Nuwara Eliya from $8 USD. First, Second, and Third Class carriages are available, with reserved seats selling out quickly.

For greater flexibility, hiring a car with a driver is a more expensive option, typically costing around $75 USD per day. This allows for custom itineraries and stops. Domestic flights are the fastest and most expensive way to travel long distances, offering aerial views. These are limited and generally connect Colombo with other parts of the island, with travel times ranging from 15-45 minutes.

Travel Within Cities

Within cities, tuk-tuks are a common and adventurous way to travel short distances. Metered tuk-tuks generally charge around LKR 100 (approximately $0.35 USD) for the first kilometer and LKR 80-90 for subsequent kilometers. For non-metered tuk-tuks, it is advisable to agree on the fare beforehand. Hiring a tuk-tuk for a full day can cost about LKR 10,000 (around $25 USD).

Taxis are available in most major towns. Some taxis operate on fixed prices, while others, especially in Colombo, are metered. It is recommended to agree on a rate before starting the journey if the taxi is not metered.

The starting price for a taxi in Sri Lanka is around LKR 80, with each kilometer costing LKR 70. A 5km taxi ride costs approximately LKR 430 (around $1.40 USD). Ride-hailing apps like PickMe and Uber are widely used in larger cities like Colombo, providing fare estimates and eliminating the need for negotiation. PickMe is the dominant local app.

Buses are also available for intercity travel and are very cheap, with a typical fare around LKR 40 (approximately $0.13 USD).
