Jaffna is served by the Jaffna Railway Station and the Jaffna Bus Station, which are central to its public transport network. Kankesanturai Airport (JAF), also known as Jaffna Airport, is located about 16 kilometers from the city center.

By Train:

Direct train services are available from Colombo Fort to Jaffna. The journey typically takes around 6 hours and 40 minutes to 7 hours and 44 minutes. Ticket prices vary by class, with first-class seats costing approximately LKR 2,800 - LKR 4,000 (around US$9 to US$14) . It is advisable to book train tickets in advance, especially for first-class seats, up to 30 days prior to travel .

By Bus:

Buses operate frequently between Colombo and Jaffna. The travel time ranges from 7 hours and 30 minutes to 11 hours, depending on the service . Air-conditioned buses offer a comfortable and affordable option, with tickets starting from approximately US$13 to US$22 . Buses usually depart from Colombo's Pettah area or dedicated bus stops and arrive at the Jaffna Bus Station . Overnight bus services are also common .

By Private Transfer (Car/Minivan):

Private cars and minivans offer direct and flexible travel from Colombo to Jaffna, taking around 7 to 7.5 hours . Costs for a private car can be around US$277, while a minivan for up to four passengers may cost approximately US$330 .

By Air:

Jaffna Airport (JAF) primarily handles international flights from India (Chennai and Tiruchirappalli) . Domestic flights from Colombo's Ratmalana Airport (RML) are also available, with a flying time of about 70-75 minutes . A one-way domestic flight ticket can cost approximately LKR 35,400 (around US$115), with round-trip fares around LKR 69,030 (around US$225) .
