Navigating Nepal is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.

Inter-City Travel

For traveling between cities, buses are a common and varied option. Local buses are the most budget-friendly, though they can be crowded and offer a basic experience, with fares for longer routes typically being quite low.

Tourist buses provide more comfort with amenities like air-conditioning and reclining seats; a trip from Kathmandu to Pokhara costs approximately NPR 800 - 1600 (about $6-$12 USD). For a premium experience, deluxe or VIP sofa buses offer enhanced comfort, sometimes including meals, with prices around $19 USD for a Kathmandu to Pokhara journey.

For quicker travel, domestic flights are available, connecting major hubs like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lukla. These flights are the most expensive, often exceeding $100 USD for popular routes, but significantly reduce travel time.

Private cars and jeeps offer the highest level of comfort and flexibility, allowing for custom itineraries. Daily car rentals in Kathmandu start around NPR 5000 (about $37 USD) for nine hours, while a jeep can be around NPR 7500 (about $56 USD) for the same duration. Longer, one-way jeep journeys, such as Kathmandu to Kharikhola, can range from $90 to $600 USD depending on the season and group size.

Travel Within Cities

Within cities, local buses, microbuses, and tempos are the cheapest ways to get around, with fares in Kathmandu typically ranging from NPR 20-40 (about $0.15-$0.30 USD) per trip.

Taxis offer more convenience but often require negotiation for fares, as meters are rarely used outside of airport fixed rates. A typical 5 km taxi ride in Kathmandu might cost around NPR 580 (about $4 USD), with a starting fare of NPR 300 (about $2.25 USD) and NPR 100 per additional kilometer. Ride-hailing apps like Pathao and Taximandu offer transparent pricing.

For short distances and navigating narrow streets in tourist areas like Thamel, cycle rickshaws are a traditional and inexpensive option, with prices starting around NPR 80 (about $0.60 USD) after negotiation. For independent exploration, renting a motorcycle or bicycle is possible, with daily motorcycle rentals around NPR 800 (about $6 USD) and quality mountain bikes ranging from NPR 800 to $10-$15 USD per day.
