Shillong's primary air gateway is the Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport - SHL), though it has limited flight connectivity. The major transport hub for air and rail travel is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) and Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) in Guwahati, Assam, which serves as the main entry point to Meghalaya.

By Air:

  • Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport - SHL) is approximately 30-35 km from the city. Direct flights are available from Kolkata and Imphal via airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Alliance Air.
  • Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati is the more connected airport, located about 100-130 km from Shillong. It offers regular flights from major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
  • From Guwahati Airport, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to Shillong.

By Train:

  • Shillong does not have its own railway station.
  • The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), approximately 96-105 km away. This station is well-connected to major cities across India.
  • From Guwahati Railway Station, travelers can easily hire taxis or take buses to reach Shillong.

By Road:

  • The road journey from Guwahati to Shillong is a popular option, typically taking 2.5 to 3 hours to cover about 97-100 km via NH40/NH6.
  • Buses:: Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) operate frequent bus services from Guwahati's Paltan Bazar and ISBT to Shillong. Fares generally range from ₹130 to ₹500.
  • Taxis:: Both shared and private taxis are widely available from Guwahati, including from the airport and railway station. Shared cabs can cost around ₹500-₹750 per person, while private taxis typically range from ₹1700 to ₹4216.
  • Self-drive car rentals are also an option for those preferring to drive themselves.
