Ollantaytambo's primary transport hub is its train station, which serves as a crucial point for journeys to Machu Picchu. The town also has areas where colectivos and taxis congregate for travel to and from Cusco and other Sacred Valley destinations.

From Cusco to Ollantaytambo (and vice versa):

  • Colectivos (shared vans/minivans):: These are a budget-friendly option, typically costing around 10-15 soles (approximately $3-$5 USD) per person. They depart from Calle Pavitos in Cusco, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. Colectivos usually depart once full, so waiting times may vary. In Ollantaytambo, they pick up and drop off near the Plaza de Armas.
  • Private Taxis:: A private taxi offers a direct and more comfortable journey, taking approximately 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. The cost typically ranges from 90 to 200 soles (approximately $25-$55 USD), with airport taxis potentially costing more. It is advisable to negotiate the fare before starting the journey.
  • Shuttle/Private Transfer Services:: Several companies offer shuttle or private transfer services from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, with costs varying. These can take around 1 hour 12 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Trains:: While trains run between Cusco (Poroy or San Pedro stations) and Ollantaytambo, they are typically part of a ticket to Machu Picchu. It is not recommended as a standalone option for reaching Ollantaytambo from Cusco, as it is significantly more expensive and often involves an initial bus transfer from Cusco to the Ollantaytambo train station.

From Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes):

  • Trains:: This is the primary and only direct way to get from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), as there are no roads connecting the two. Train services like PeruRail and Inca Rail operate hourly, with a journey time of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Ticket prices vary widely, from around $27 to $650, depending on the service and class. From Machu Picchu Pueblo, buses transport visitors to the Machu Picchu citadel in about 30 minutes.
