Getting There and Away

Tarapoto is primarily served by Cad. FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport (TPP) for air travel, located just outside the city. For ground transportation, several bus terminals operate within Tarapoto, with major companies often having their own stations.

By Air (Flights):

  • From Lima (LIM):: Direct flights are the quickest way, typically taking around 1 hour and 20 to 35 minutes. Airlines such as LATAM, Star Peru, Sky Airline, and JetSmart offer daily services. Indicative one-way costs range from approximately $37 to $170 USD.
  • From Iquitos (IQT):: Direct flights take about 1 hour.
  • From Chiclayo (CIX):: Direct flights take approximately 50 minutes.

By Bus:

  • From Lima:: Bus journeys are significantly longer than flights, ranging from approximately 15 hours and 40 minutes to over 29 hours due to the distance of about 612-628 miles (985-1005 km). Prices typically vary from around $26 to $70 USD.
  • From Chiclayo:: Bus travel averages around 17 hours, with costs starting from approximately $19 USD.
  • From Moyobamba:: Bus trips take about 2 hours and 23 minutes to 3 hours, with fares starting from $18 USD.
  • From Rioja:: A bus journey typically takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes, costing about $30 USD.

By Car/Colectivo:

  • Driving from Lima to Tarapoto takes approximately 15 hours and 30 minutes for the 930 km (578 miles) road distance.
  • Colectivo (shared taxi) services are available for shorter distances, such as to Moyobamba (about 2 hours) or Yurimaguas (about 1.5 hours), with costs ranging from S/ 10 to S/ 20.

Local Transport:

Mototaxis are widely used for getting around within Tarapoto and to nearby areas.
