Getting There and Away

Tiradentes does not have its own major airport; the closest is Belo Horizonte's Confins International Airport (CNF). The town has a main bus terminal, Terminal Rodoviário de Tiradentes, and is also connected by a historic steam train to São João del Rei.

By Air and Bus:

Fly to Belo Horizonte (CNF), then take a bus from Belo Horizonte to São João del Rei. The bus journey from Belo Horizonte takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and costs around R$105-R$107. From São João del Rei, a local bus to Tiradentes takes about 30 minutes, costing R$4-R$6.40, or consider a taxi for approximately R$50.

By Bus from Rio de Janeiro:

There are no direct buses from Rio de Janeiro to Tiradentes. Travel by bus from Rio's Novo Rio bus terminal to São João del Rei, which takes around 5.5 to 6.5 hours. From São João del Rei, take a local bus to Tiradentes (30 minutes, R$4-R$6.40). The total cost for the bus and local transfer is approximately R$184-R$266.

By Bus from São Paulo:

Direct bus services from São Paulo to Tiradentes are not available. Buses depart from São Paulo's Tietê Bus Terminal to São João del Rei, with journeys typically lasting 9 to 11 hours. From São João del Rei, connect to Tiradentes via local bus (30 minutes, R$4-R$6.40). The total cost for the bus and local transfer ranges from R$170-R$250.

By Car Rental:

Renting a car offers flexibility. Driving from Rio de Janeiro to Tiradentes takes approximately 4 hours and costs R$180-R$270 for fuel and tolls. From Belo Horizonte, the drive is about 2 hours and 47 minutes, costing R$100-R$150. From São Paulo, expect a drive of around 6 hours and 1 minute, with costs between R$250-R$380. Car rental services are available in Tiradentes and at nearby airports.

By Maria Fumaça (Steam Train):

For a scenic arrival from São João del Rei, the historic Maria Fumaça steam train operates primarily on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The 12-kilometer journey takes about 35-45 minutes and offers views of the countryside. A one-way ticket costs R$86. This train ride is considerably more expensive than the local bus.
