São Paulo is a significant transportation hub in South America, featuring two primary airports: São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) and São Paulo/Congonhas–Deputado Freitas Nobre Airport (CGH). The city also has major intercity bus terminals, including Tietê Bus Terminal, which is the largest in Latin America, and Barra Funda Bus Terminal.

By Air (Flights):

São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) serves as the main international gateway. Flights from major US cities to GRU can range from approximately $173 to over $1,200 for one-way or round-trip, with travel times varying based on direct or connecting flights.

By Bus (Intercity):

São Paulo is well-connected by bus to other Brazilian cities. For instance, a bus journey from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo typically takes between 5 hours 30 minutes and 7 hours, with ticket prices ranging from approximately $10 to $30. From Curitiba, bus travel to São Paulo generally takes around 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours, with costs starting from about $10 to $17.

Airport Transfers:

  • From Guarulhos Airport (GRU):: Options include executive buses (Airport Express), which offer comfortable direct service, or a combination of local buses and the metro/train system. A bus to Guarulhos Airport from Terminal Rodoviário de Guarulhos takes about 30 minutes and costs R$2-23. Taxis from São Paulo to GRU can cost R$55-70 and take around 12 minutes. There is also a rail link to the airport, requiring a free shuttle bus transfer to the terminals.
  • From Congonhas Airport (CGH):: Taxis are available in the Arrivals area, with average fares around R$35-40. Ride-share services like Uber are also active. Public buses and metro connections are available, with the closest metro station being Sao Judas (Line 1 – Blue Line), requiring a bus transfer from the airport.

Car Rental:

Car rental services are available from major companies at the airports and within the city, with daily rates in São Paulo starting from around $14 to $28. Drivers should be aware that finding the rental location and understanding procedures may take time, and a language barrier could exist.
