By Car:

The drive from Christchurch typically takes around 2 hours 18 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes along State Highway 1, covering approximately 180 kilometers. From Picton, the journey is about 1 hour 54 minutes to 2.5 hours, a distance of around 156 kilometers. Expect fuel costs to be approximately NZD 53-77 from Christchurch and NZD 46-66 from Picton. Rental cars are widely available at major airports like Christchurch.

By Bus:

InterCity operates daily bus services to Kaikoura. From Christchurch, the journey takes about 2 hours 40 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes, with fares ranging from NZD 30-60. Buses depart from the Christchurch Bus Exchange and arrive at Kaikoura's West End. From Picton, bus travel is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes, costing between NZD 28-55.

By Train:

The Coastal Pacific train provides a highly scenic route between Christchurch, Kaikoura, and Picton. This service operates seasonally, typically from late September to late April, and runs four times a week. The journey from Christchurch to Kaikoura takes about 2 hours 50 minutes, while from Picton it is approximately 2 hours 35 minutes. Ticket prices for a scenic seat can range from NZD 110-449. Booking in advance is recommended.
