Having explored the Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mackenzie Region, I find it a truly captivating destination, blending awe-inspiring alpine scenery with unique stargazing experiences. Visitors are drawn to its majestic mountains, vast glaciers, and the distinctive turquoise lakes that punctuate the landscape.
While Mount Cook Village itself is a smaller settlement, Lake Tekapo provides notable opportunities for social interaction. Here, I observed several backpacker hostels, such as Tailor Made Tekapo Backpackers and Haka House, fostering a vibrant social atmosphere with communal kitchens and shared spaces, perfect for connecting with fellow travelers. Guided stargazing tours, including those at Tekapo Springs, also create a shared experience where guests can socialize while marvelling at the night sky.
