The Hunter Valley's evening scene complements its reputation as a premier wine region, offering refined drinking experiences centered around cellar doors, gourmet dining establishments, and a selection of quality pubs and breweries. While a vibrant late-night club scene is not prominent, visitors can find inviting venues for relaxed drinks, live music, and social gatherings.
Entertainment and Music:
The Hunter Valley presents a lively music and entertainment landscape, often seamlessly blended with its celebrated wine and dining offerings, complemented by dedicated venues and large-scale festivals.
Visitors can experience live music at various wineries, such as Brokenwood Wines and Saddler's Creek Wines, which often host acoustic performances. For a more traditional pub atmosphere, Huntlee Tavern regularly features live bands and DJs. Additionally, the region is known for its major vineyard concerts and music festivals throughout the year, including events like the Red Hot Summer Tour and A Day On The Green, which attract notable artists.
1. Huntlee Tavern
Type: Gastropub
This modern gastropub features exposed brick and polished wood, creating a welcoming and stylish atmosphere. It offers multiple spaces for drinks, including an outdoor patio. Guests can enjoy a curated selection of beers and expertly crafted cocktails. Live entertainment is a regular feature, with DJ sets on Fridays, live bands on Saturdays, and solo performances on Sundays, making it a lively spot for an evening out.
Getting There: Huntlee Tavern is located in Branxton. Due to the spread-out nature of the Hunter Valley, walking between most venues is not feasible. Taxis or ride-sharing services are recommended. For groups, maxi-taxis often offer flat fees for transfers within main areas like Cessnock, Lovedale, or Pokolbin.
2. The Valley Brewhouse
Type: Brewery and Bistro
Situated at the entrance to the Hunter Valley, this venue is dedicated to local craft brews. Guests can enjoy a tasting paddle, join a brewery tour, or simply relax with a freshly made beer. Beyond the diverse beer selection, the brewhouse serves classic pub fare. Weekends often feature live music and smoked meats in the expansive beer garden, providing a casual and open atmosphere suitable for families and groups.
Getting There: The Valley Brewhouse is accessible by taxi or ride-sharing services. Given its location, it is generally not within walking distance of major accommodation hubs. On Saturday nights, the 'Plan B Bus' offers a hop-on-hop-off service between participating accommodations and venues like Potters Brewery, Harrigan's, and Goldfish/Roche Estate, for a per-person fee, which might connect to areas near the Brewhouse.
3. Harrigan's Hunter Valley
Type: Irish Pub and Sports Bar
Harrigan's offers a blend of traditional Irish charm and contemporary Australian style. The interior features cosy fireplaces, inviting booths, exposed brickwork, and rustic timber. It serves as a lively spot for sports enthusiasts to watch games and for those seeking well-made cocktails. Al fresco dining is also available, providing scenic views of the Hunter Valley.
Getting There: Located near the Hunter Valley Gardens, Harrigan's is a recognized evening destination. Taxis and ride-sharing services are the primary means of transport for visitors not driving themselves. On Saturday evenings, the 'Plan B Bus' includes Harrigan's as one of its regular stops for its hop-on-hop-off service, offering a convenient option for a flat fee per person.
4. Saddlers Creek Wines
Type: Winery Cellar Door (Evening)
For a relaxed winery experience in the evening, Saddlers Creek Wines offers 'Friday Night Wine & Chill.' The cellar door extends its hours on Fridays, providing an opportunity to enjoy their wines, accompanied by light eats and live music. The atmosphere is unpretentious and friendly, allowing guests to wind down with quality local wines.
Getting There: Saddlers Creek Wines is located within the main Hunter Valley wine country. As with most wineries, it is best reached by taxi or ride-sharing services if visitors plan to drink. Distances between wineries and accommodations necessitate vehicle transport.
