St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, is primarily served by St. John's International Airport (YYT) for air travel. The city also has a public bus system, Metrobus, which operates within St. John's, Mount Pearl, and Paradise. For sea travel, ferry services connect Newfoundland to mainland Canada.
By Air:
St. John's International Airport (YYT) is located approximately 10 minutes from the city center. Major Canadian airlines such as Air Canada, WestJet, PAL Airlines, and Porter Airlines offer flights to St. John's. Approximate flight times are 1.5 hours from Halifax, 2.5 hours from Montreal, 3 hours from Ottawa, and 3 hours from Toronto. Flights from Edmonton and Calgary typically take 5 to 5.5 hours.
By Ferry:
Marine Atlantic provides ferry services connecting Newfoundland to North Sydney, Nova Scotia. There are two routes to Newfoundland: a year-round daily service to Port aux Basques (approximately 7 hours), and a seasonal tri-weekly service to Argentia (approximately 16 hours) available from June to September. Argentia is about 131 km from St. John's. Ferry rates vary based on route, age, vehicle type, and cabin selection. As of July 2025, a recent announcement indicated a 50% reduction in passenger and vehicle fares for Marine Atlantic services.
By Bus:
DRL-LR offers daily motor coach service across the island of Newfoundland, including a route between St. John's and Port aux Basques. The westbound coach departs St. John's at 7:30 a.m. for Port aux Basques, and the eastbound coach departs Port aux Basques at 8:00 a.m. for St. John's. The cost for a single adult fare from St. John's to Port aux Basques is approximately $165. Other regional bus and taxi services connect St. John's to various parts of Newfoundland.
By Car:
Car rental services are available at St. John's International Airport, with companies like Avis, Alamo, Thrifty, National, Dollar, Enterprise, Budget, and Hertz having on-site operations. Car sharing through Turo is also available at the airport. Daily rental prices can start from around $85.
