The Isle of Lewis & Harris has key transport hubs including Stornoway Airport (SYY) for air travel, and ferry terminals at Stornoway and Tarbert connecting to the Scottish mainland and the Isle of Skye. Stornoway also serves as the main bus station for local services.

By Air:

Flights operate to Stornoway Airport (SYY) on the Isle of Lewis. Hebridean Airways offers flights to Benbecula (approximately 35 minutes).

  • Ullapool to Stornoway (Isle of Lewis):: This route connects Lewis directly to the Scottish mainland. The journey typically takes around 2 hours 40 minutes, with up to four sailings daily. Foot passenger fares average approximately £50, while a car and passengers might cost around £183.
  • Uig (Isle of Skye) to Tarbert (Isle of Harris):: This ferry links Harris with the Isle of Skye. The crossing lasts approximately 1 hour 40 minutes and operates daily, with up to eight weekly sailings. Foot passenger fares average around £35, and a car with passengers typically costs about £114.

By Car:

Visitors can drive to the ferry terminals at Ullapool or Uig with their vehicles. Car rental services are available on Lewis and Harris, including at Stornoway Airport and Ferry Terminal, and in Tarbert. Daily rental costs can range from approximately £39 to over £115, depending on the vehicle type and rental duration. One-way hire options, such as collecting on the mainland and dropping off on the islands, may also be available.

By Bus:

Local bus services run across the Isle of Lewis and Harris from Monday to Saturday, centered around Stornoway Bus Station. These services connect the main settlements on both islands, with schedules often coordinated with ferry and flight arrivals. For instance, a bus journey between key points on Lewis and Harris can take around 53 minutes. Bus fares are generally inexpensive.
