1. Melrose Abbey
Explore the magnificent ruins of Melrose Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1136 and the resting place of Robert the Bruce’s heart. Visitors can admire the graceful architecture, ornate carvings including a famous bagpipe-playing pig gargoyle, and delve into the past at the Commendator's House Museum, which displays medieval artefacts found during excavations. While the abbey church interior is currently closed for conservation, the grounds, cloister, and museum remain open.
Cost: Adult (16-64yrs): £4.50; Concession (65yrs+ and unemployed): £3.50; Child (7-15yrs): £2.50. These are reduced prices due to ongoing conservation work. Free for Historic Scotland members.
