Navigating Montenegro is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.

Inter-City Travel

For traveling between cities in Montenegro, buses are the most common and generally cheapest option. They connect major towns and tourist areas. A bus ticket from Podgorica to Budva, for example, typically costs around €11 and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

For longer journeys, such as Podgorica to Bijelo Polje, train tickets cost approximately €5.20. The scenic train route from Bar to Podgorica costs around €2.80, and the full journey from Bar to Bijelo Polje is approximately €21 for a second-class ticket. Train travel from Podgorica to Nikšić is about €3.20.

Rental cars offer flexibility for intercity travel, with economy car rentals costing from €30-€50 per day in summer, including insurance, and potentially lower in winter, from €10-€40 per day. Prices for car rentals vary based on location and time of year, with averages around $45 per day. Taxis for intercity routes will vary by company and can be more expensive, though prices can be discussed in advance.

Travel Within Cities

Within Montenegrin cities, public transportation mainly consists of buses. In Podgorica, a local bus ticket costs €0.70, and payment is typically cash to the driver.

Taxis are also widely available and often used. The base fare for a taxi in Montenegrin cities ranges from €0.50 to €1.50, with an additional charge of about €0.60 per kilometer. A 10-kilometer taxi ride could cost between €6.00 and €11.00.

In Budva, taxi prices within the city are typically around €5, while trips to nearby settlements might be about €10. It's advisable to ensure the taxi meter is running or confirm the price before starting the journey.
