Florence is well-connected through its local airport, Florence Peretola Airport (FLR), and its central train station, Santa Maria Novella (SMN). Pisa International Airport also serves as an alternative gateway to the region.

By Air (Florence Peretola Airport - FLR):

  • Tram (T2 Line):: Direct connection to Santa Maria Novella train station. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes and costs around €1.50 - €1.70. Trams run frequently, every 5-10 minutes, from early morning until late night.
  • Volainbus Shuttle Bus:: Operates directly between the airport and Santa Maria Novella train station. The trip is about 20 minutes. A one-way ticket costs approximately €6, and a round-trip is about €10.
  • Taxi:: A taxi ride to the city center typically takes 15-20 minutes. Flat rates range from approximately €22-€26 during weekdays, with higher fares for nights or holidays, and potential extra charges for luggage.

By Air (Pisa International Airport - Galileo Galilei):

  • People Mover + Train:: A shuttle train (People Mover) connects Pisa Airport to Pisa Centrale railway station. From there, trains to Florence Santa Maria Novella take about 1 hour and cost under €10, in addition to the People Mover fare of approximately €5.
  • Direct Bus:: Bus services, such as Terravision or Autostradale, connect Pisa Airport directly to Florence. The journey typically lasts about 1 hour, with fares around €15 for a one-way ticket.

By Train (Florence Santa Maria Novella - SMN):

  • Florence SMN is a major high-speed rail hub, connecting to many Italian cities.
  • From Rome:: High-speed trains take approximately 1 hour 19 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, with tickets starting from around €10-€15 when booked in advance.
  • From Milan:: High-speed trains reach Florence in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes.
  • From Bologna:: The journey takes about 35 minutes by high-speed train.

By Bus (Intercity):

  • Various bus operators like Itabus, Flixbus, and Autolinee Toscane provide connections to and from Florence, including routes to major cities like Rome and Siena. Fares can start from as low as €5 for certain routes.

By Car Rental:

  • Renting a car is generally recommended for exploring the Tuscan countryside rather than for use within Florence's city center due to ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones), narrow streets, and parking limitations.
  • Car rental offices are available at Florence Peretola Airport, often offering better rates than city center locations. An International Driving Permit is advisable for non-EU visitors.
