Keflavik International Airport (KEF) serves as Iceland's primary international gateway, situated approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the capital, Reykjavik. The main transport hub in Reykjavik for airport transfers is the BSÍ Bus Terminal, which facilitates connections to various parts of the city.

Airport Bus Transfers (e.g., Flybus, Airport Direct, Terravision):

These services offer a popular and efficient way to travel between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik. Buses are typically scheduled to align with flight arrivals and departures, providing comfortable coaches, often with Wi-Fi. The journey to the BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavik generally takes about 45 minutes. For an additional fee, services like Flybus+ or Airport Direct SmartBus include a transfer to designated bus stops near accommodations, which can add approximately 30 minutes to the total travel time. Costs for a one-way ticket to the BSÍ Bus Terminal are typically between $27 and $30 USD (€27-30). A ticket including a hotel drop-off usually costs around $43 USD or 4,999 ISK.

Public Bus (Strætó bs Route 55):

For those seeking a more economical option, public bus route 55 connects Keflavik Airport directly to Reykjavik. This service involves more stops and a longer travel duration, typically between 75 to 90 minutes. Public buses are less frequent than private airport transfers and may have limited space for large luggage. A one-way ticket costs approximately $15 to $17 USD (around 1,680-2,400 ISK).

Taxis and Private Transfers:

Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal, offering direct, door-to-door service to Reykjavik. This is generally the most expensive option, with fares typically ranging from $150 to $250 USD (or €105-135 / ISK 16,000-40,000) for a one-way trip, which can vary based on the time of day, destination, and potential surcharges for weekends or holidays. Some companies may offer fixed rates for the journey. The travel time is approximately 45-50 minutes. Note that ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft are not available in Iceland.

Car Rentals:

Renting a car at Keflavik Airport provides considerable flexibility for exploring Iceland. Several reputable car rental companies operate at or near the airport, many offering a complimentary shuttle service from the terminal to their rental lots. Rental prices vary significantly depending on the vehicle type, rental company, and the season. A small vehicle might be available from approximately €147 / $167 per day (21,351 ISK). It is highly recommended to book a rental car in advance.
