The primary transport hub for accessing the Lake Mývatn area in North Iceland is Akureyri, which hosts a domestic airport and connections for various ground transport. Reykjavík also serves as a major gateway, offering domestic flights to Akureyri.

By Car:

Renting a car provides the most flexibility for exploring the Lake Mývatn region and its surroundings. The drive from Akureyri to Lake Mývatn typically takes approximately one hour via the Ring Road (Route 1) . From Reykjavík, the drive is longer, generally around 6 to 7 hours . A standard 2WD vehicle is suitable for summer driving on paved roads, but a 4WD with winter tires is recommended for travel between October and April due to potential snow and ice . Car rentals are available in Akureyri and at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavík, with indicative daily costs starting from approximately 5,969 ISK .

By Bus:

Public buses operated by Strætó connect Akureyri to the Mývatn area (Skútustaðir) several times a week, with a journey time of about 55 minutes and tickets costing between $20–29 . Strætó also offers routes connecting Akureyri to Reykjavík, which takes approximately six hours . Bus tickets can be purchased on board using cash or credit cards, and buses often provide free internet access .

By Organized Tour:

Numerous day and multi-day tours depart from Akureyri and Reykjavík, including transport and guided visits to Lake Mývatn's attractions. A full-day "Lake Mývatn Classic" tour from Akureyri can cost from 39,900 ISK per person and lasts 7-8 hours . For cruise ship passengers, shore excursions from Akureyri Port to Lake Mývatn are available, with prices ranging from 21,000 to 42,000 ISK per person for tours lasting 6-7 hours .

By Airport Transfer:

Scheduled transfers from Akureyri Airport (AEY) to hotels and guesthouses in the Lake Mývatn area are offered, costing from 10,900 ISK per person, with a journey time of about 1.5 hours . These transfers are often timed with EasyJet flight arrivals . Private transfer options are also available .
