Trains:

  • From Paris (Gare Montparnasse): Direct TGV trains are available, with some requiring a change in Rennes. Fastest journeys can take around 2 hours 14 minutes to 2 hours 32 minutes, while the average is between 3 to 3 hours 49 minutes. Costs generally range from €23-€29 when booked in advance, with averages around €65-€74.
  • From Rennes: Trains operate hourly, taking approximately 1 hour, with tickets costing €8-€16.

Buses:

  • From Paris: Regular services are provided by FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus. Direct journeys typically range from 3 hours 50 minutes to 4 hours 50 minutes, though average travel times can be longer. Fares can start from €23-€35.
  • From Rennes: Direct buses take about 1 hour 10 minutes, with tickets starting from approximately $4.
  • From Mont Saint-Michel: Direct buses are available, with a travel time of around 45 minutes and tickets from $6.

Ferries:

  • From the UK (Portsmouth, Poole): Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries offer routes. Services from Portsmouth typically take 8 hours 44 minutes to 11 hours, while from Poole via Jersey, it takes around 6 hours 20 minutes.
  • From the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey): Direct services are available. Journeys from Jersey (St Helier) can be as fast as 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes with DFDS, or up to 4 hours with Brittany Ferries, with costs around €228. Trips from Guernsey take about 2 hours to 2 hours 50 minutes.

Flights:

  • Saint-Malo does not have a commercial airport. The nearest commercial options are Rennes Airport (RNS), approximately 68 km away, and Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE), about 168 km away. Dinard Bretagne Airport (DNR), 9 km away, primarily handles private aviation.
  • From Rennes Airport: Travelers can take a 1-hour train ride or a bus to Saint-Malo.
  • From Nantes Airport: Options include a bus via Rennes (around 3 hours 45 minutes) or a train connection via Rennes (approximately 2.5 hours from Nantes station).

Car Rentals:

  • Car rental services are available at locations including the Saint-Malo train station and ferry terminal. Driving from Paris typically takes 4 to 4.5 hours via toll roads. The journey from Rennes is about 1 hour, and from Nantes, it is approximately 2 hours. Note that vehicles are not permitted within the walled city of Intra-Muros.
