How to get around Czechia
Navigating Czechia is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
Traveling between cities in Czechia is typically done by train or bus. Both offer affordable options. Buses are often very cheap, with some long journeys costing only a few euros. For instance, a bus trip from Brno to Ostrava takes about 3 hours, and Prague to Ostrava ranges from 5 to 6 hours. Another example is a one-way bus ticket from Kaunas to Prague, which can range from 12 EUR to 50 EUR.
Trains are another popular choice, with the railway network connecting most towns and cities. Train fares are generally inexpensive, though they saw a nearly 5% increase in December 2024. A 100-kilometer train journey could cost around 216 CZK (approximately 8.70 EUR).
An All-Day Ticket for travel throughout the Czech Republic can be purchased from České dráhy for 799 CZK (around 32 EUR), allowing unlimited travel in second class on all their trains. For a one-way journey from Ostrava to Pilsen, this ticket would effectively cost about 400 CZK (around 16 EUR). Private carriers like RegioJet have stated they intend to maintain current prices.
Car rental is a more expensive option, with daily costs varying by city. In Prague, the average cost can be around $166 per day, with the lowest found at $33 per day. In Brno, it averages around $68 per day. The cheapest month to rent a car is typically October, averaging $19.90 per day, while July is the most expensive at around $44.40 per day. Overall, car rentals in Czechia average about $35 per day.
Travel Within Cities
Within Czech cities, public transport like trams, buses, and the metro are the most common and economical ways to travel. In Prague, short-term tickets are available for 30 minutes at 30 CZK (around 1.20 EUR) and 90 minutes at 40 CZK (around 1.60 EUR).
For longer visits, a 24-hour ticket costs 120 CZK (around 4.80 EUR) and a 72-hour ticket costs 330 CZK (around 13.30 EUR). These tickets allow unlimited use of public transport, including the metro, trams, and buses, for the duration of their validity.
Children under 15 and seniors over 65 often travel for free, but may need to show proof of age.
Taxis are a more expensive way to travel within cities. In Prague, the base fare is 60 CZK (around 2.40 EUR), plus 36 CZK (around 1.40 EUR) per kilometer. A 5km taxi ride generally costs about 185 CZK (around 7.40 EUR).
Taxis in Prague are metered, and official city rates are regulated. For example, a taxi from Prague Airport to the city center costs between €30 and €36.
Ride-hailing services like Uber are available in some Czech cities. Liftago, a local app, allows users to choose drivers based on price, with rates ranging from 24 CZK to 36 CZK per kilometer.
