How to get around Cyprus
Navigating Cyprus is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
For journeys between cities in Cyprus, public buses offer the most economical option. A single intercity bus ticket typically ranges from €4.00 to €9.00, depending on the distance, such as a trip from Nicosia to Limassol for about €4.00 or Larnaca to Paphos for €7.00. Return tickets are generally between €7.00 and €13.00.
For more frequent travel, daily intercity passes can be purchased for around €10.00 to €15.00, weekly passes for approximately €50.00 to €75.00, and monthly passes for €150.00 to €225.00. Airport shuttle services provide a convenient, moderately priced option, with a journey from Larnaca Airport to Nicosia costing approximately €9.00, and to Limassol around €10.00.
For private, flexible travel, taxis are available for long distances, operating on a meter system. During the day (06:01 to 20:30), the fare is around €0.95 per kilometer with a €3.80 starting fee. Night rates (20:31 to 06:00) increase to about €1.10 per kilometer with a €4.80 starting fee, plus potential luggage charges. Pre-booked airport transfers offer fixed rates; for instance, a taxi from Larnaca Airport to Ayia Napa is roughly €80-€90.
Renting a car provides the highest level of flexibility, though it is a more expensive option. Daily car rental prices vary significantly based on vehicle type and season, starting from approximately €15.00 per day for economy models.
Travel Within Cities
Within Cypriot cities, local buses are the primary and most affordable mode of public transport. A single bus ticket during the day (04:00 to 21:00) typically costs €1.50 to €2.00. For night services (21:00 to 04:00), the fare increases to €2.50 to €3.00.
Daily bus passes are available for €5.00 to €6.50, offering unlimited travel within a city for the day. Weekly passes can range from €10.00 to €35.00, and monthly passes from €30.00 to €60.00, with some options providing 50% discounts for students.
Taxis are also readily available for travel within cities. Their fares are metered, with a daytime (06:00 to 20:30) starting fee of approximately €3.42 to €4.00 and a charge of about €0.73 to €0.75 per kilometer. Night rates (20:30 to 06:00) are generally about 15% higher.
