How to get around Croatia
Navigating Croatia is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
Traveling between cities in Croatia offers several options, with buses being the most popular and generally cost-effective choice. The bus network is extensive, connecting major cities, coastal towns, and even smaller villages. For example, a bus journey from Zagreb to Split typically costs between €20 and €26 and takes 5 to 8.5 hours. A route from Split to Dubrovnik can range from 99 to 125 HRK (approximately €13 to €17) for a distance of around 227 km.
Trains are available, primarily connecting inland areas, with Zagreb serving as the central hub. However, the train network is less extensive, especially along the coast, and bus travel is often preferred due to better coverage and sometimes shorter journey times. For instance, a train from Zagreb to Split can take around 8 hours.
Ferries and catamarans are essential for island hopping and coastal travel. Prices for foot passengers on ferries vary, with a trip from Split to Hvar costing between €5.84 and €25.00, depending on the season and type of vessel. Car ferries have different prices for vehicles. Flights are the fastest but most expensive option for long distances, such as between Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik.
For a more flexible and private experience, car rental is available, with prices averaging around $35 per day. The cheapest rates can be found in December, averaging $11 per day, while February is the most expensive.
Travel Within Cities
Within Croatian cities, public transport is mainly served by buses and, in Zagreb and Osijek, trams. A single bus ticket within a city is very affordable, typically costing around 15 kuna (approximately €2). You can purchase paper tickets from kiosks or directly from the driver on buses and trams, though buying from the driver may incur a higher price. Prepaid, stored-value, monthly, and annual passes are also available, offering more affordable options for frequent users.
Taxis are also available, with a starting price of around 15 HRK (approximately €2) and an additional 6 HRK (approximately €0.80) per kilometer. A 5km ride can cost about 45 HRK (around €6). Uber is also available in some Croatian cities.
