Getting There and Away

Aomori is well-connected by air, rail, and sea, featuring Aomori Airport (AOJ), the central Aomori Station, and the Shinkansen hub at Shin-Aomori Station. The Aomori Ferry Terminal also serves as a gateway to Hokkaido.

By Air:

Flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to Aomori Airport (AOJ) typically take around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. One-way fares can start from approximately 10,130 yen with discount tickets, but regular fares may be higher. From Aomori Airport, JR buses connect to Aomori Station in about 35 minutes, costing 860 yen, and this route is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

By Train (Shinkansen):

The Hayabusa bullet train on the JR Tohoku Shinkansen line provides direct service from Tokyo Station to Shin-Aomori Station in approximately 3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours. A one-way ticket typically ranges from 15,000 yen to 23,000 yen for a reserved seat and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and relevant regional JR passes. Shin-Aomori Station is a brief 5 to 7-minute local train ride from Aomori Station. The Hokkaido Shinkansen also connects Shin-Aomori to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in about one hour.

By Bus:

Overnight highway buses operate from major cities like Tokyo (e.g., Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit, Shinjuku) to Aomori. The journey generally takes about 10.5 to 11 hours, with fares ranging from 4,500 yen to 18,000 yen, varying by company and bus type.

By Ferry:

Direct ferry services are available from Aomori Ferry Terminal to Hakodate in Hokkaido, with a travel time of approximately 3 hours 50 minutes. One-way passenger fares are around 2,100 yen to 2,600 yen. A shorter ferry route also exists from Oma on the Shimokita Peninsula to Hakodate, taking about 90 minutes.
