Sapporo is well-connected through its primary airport, New Chitose Airport (CTS), serving as the main aerial gateway to Hokkaido. Within the city, Sapporo Station functions as the central railway hub, offering connections for JR lines and the city's subway system. The Sapporo Municipal Subway system, comprising the Namboku, Tozai, and Toho lines, provides efficient internal travel, with major transfer points at Sapporo and Odori Stations. While Sapporo Station previously housed a main bus terminal, it is currently undergoing renovations, and temporary bus stops are located nearby.

By Air:

Flying into New Chitose Airport (CTS) from major Japanese cities like Tokyo is typically the fastest option, with flights from Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT) taking approximately 1.5 hours. One-way fares can range from around ¥5,000 to ¥46,000, with budget airlines often offering lower prices. Upon arrival at New Chitose Airport, travelers can reach central Sapporo by JR rapid train in about 35 minutes for ¥1,230, or by bus in 70-90 minutes for ¥1,300. Taxis are also available, with flat rates to the city center around ¥9,000 for a 45-minute journey.

By Train:

A direct Shinkansen route to Sapporo is not yet complete; the extension is anticipated around fiscal year 2038 or 2039. Currently, the journey from Tokyo involves taking the JR Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (approximately 4-4.5 hours), followed by a transfer to a Limited Express Hokuto train to Sapporo (about 3.5 hours). The total travel time for this route is typically 7 to 8.5 hours, with costs ranging from ¥26,000 to ¥36,000. This route is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

By Bus:

Long-distance highway buses operate from Tokyo to Sapporo, often as overnight services, and are generally more economical than train travel, though the journey is considerably longer. Within Hokkaido, express buses connect Sapporo with various destinations.

By Ferry:

For those preferring a slower pace, ferries connect Oarai Port (near Tokyo) to Tomakomai Port (south of Sapporo). The one-way journey typically takes about 18-22 hours, with fares starting around ¥11,000 to ¥11,500 for the cheapest class.

By Car:

Driving from Tokyo to Sapporo is a lengthy endeavor, taking approximately 16 hours with tolls or over 23 hours without. Toll fees are around ¥15,150, and additional ferry costs apply for crossing the Tsugaru Strait. Car rentals are available at New Chitose Airport, with daily rates starting from around ¥5,500 to ¥9,900.
