Getting There and Away

Yakushima is primarily accessed via Yakushima Airport (KUM) and its two main ferry ports, Miyanoura Port and Anbo Port. The key gateway for reaching Yakushima is Kagoshima, which offers both air and sea connections.

By Air:

  • Flights from Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) to Yakushima Airport (KUM) take approximately 35-40 minutes. Operated by Japan Air Commuter (JAC), one-way fares typically range from 12,000 to 21,000 yen, though discount fares are often available .
  • Direct flights are also available from Osaka Itami Airport (ITM) to Yakushima, taking around 90-100 minutes. One-way fares can range from 30,000 to 50,000 yen .
  • Flights from Fukuoka Airport to Yakushima Airport (KUM) take about one hour. One-way fares are generally between 17,000 and 36,000 yen .

By Sea (from Kagoshima):

  • High-speed Jetfoil (Toppy & Rocket):: These boats operate daily from Kagoshima's high-speed ferry terminal to Miyanoura or Anbo Port on Yakushima. The journey takes 2-3 hours depending on stops, with a one-way fare costing approximately 12,700 yen . A round trip ticket is around 23,300 yen and must be used within seven days .
  • Car Ferry (Ferry Yakushima 2):: A daily car ferry departs from Kagoshima New Port to Miyanoura Port. The trip takes about four hours, with a one-way passenger fare of 6,000 yen and a round-trip fare of 11,500 yen. Bringing an average-sized car on the ferry costs approximately 26,500 yen one way .
  • Overnight Freight Ferry (Ferry Hibiscus):: This ferry sails from Kagoshima's Taniyama Port to Miyanoura Port. The journey takes around 13 hours overnight. A return fare is 7,800 yen, and car transport is available .

By Sea (from Ibusuki):

  • A daily jetfoil operates between Miyanoura Port on Yakushima and Ibusuki on the Satsuma Peninsula. This route takes about 75 minutes, with a one-way fare of 10,000 yen .
