Fukuoka's primary transport hubs are Fukuoka Airport (FUK), Hakata Station, and Tenjin Station. Fukuoka Airport is exceptionally close to the city center, offering quick subway access. Hakata Station serves as the largest railway hub in the Kyushu region, providing extensive train connections, while Tenjin Station is a central point for local trains and buses.
By Air (Fukuoka Airport - FUK):
Traveling by air is a popular option, with Fukuoka Airport conveniently located just a 5-minute subway ride from Hakata Station and an 11-minute ride from Tenjin.
Domestic flights from Tokyo's Haneda or Narita airports operate frequently, taking approximately 110 minutes. Fares range from about 5,000-25,000 JPY for low-cost carriers like Peach and Jetstar Japan, to 16,000-45,000 JPY for major airlines such as JAL and ANA (as of 2025).
International direct flights connect Fukuoka with various Asian cities, including Seoul (approx. 1h 10m), Shanghai (approx. 1h 30m), and Taipei (approx. 2h 20m).
By Train (Shinkansen - Bullet Train):
The Shinkansen offers efficient travel to Hakata Station.
From Tokyo, a direct Nozomi train typically takes about 5 hours and costs around 22,000-24,000 JPY for a reserved seat. Travelers with a Japan Rail Pass can use Hikari and Sakura trains, which may require a transfer at Shin-Osaka and take approximately one hour longer.
From Osaka, the journey is approximately 2 hours and 28 minutes.
Within Kyushu, destinations like Kumamoto are about 33 minutes away, and Kagoshima is approximately 1 hour and 16 minutes by Shinkansen.
By Bus:
Long-distance and local bus services are readily available.
Night buses operate between Fukuoka (Hakata Bus Terminal, Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal) and Tokyo (Shinjuku Station), with a journey time of around 14.5 hours. Fares typically range from 9,000 to 25,000 JPY, depending on the seat type and booking date.
Within Fukuoka, local Nishitetsu buses connect the airport, Hakata Station, and Tenjin. A bus from Hakata Station to Fukuoka Airport International Terminal takes about 18 minutes and costs 260 JPY.
By Ferry:
Ferry services offer an alternative for longer journeys.
From Tokyo, Ocean Tokyu Ferry operates daily services to Kitakyushu (Shin-Moji Port), a gateway to Fukuoka. This overnight journey takes about 34 hours and costs approximately 21,000 JPY for the cheapest class.
From Busan, South Korea, two ferry options are available to Hakata Port International Terminal:
The JR Kyushu Beetle Jet Ferry (Queen Beetle) provides a faster service, taking approximately 3 hours 40 minutes.
The Camellia Line (New Camellia) is an overnight car ferry that takes about 9 to 11.5 hours, with passenger fares ranging from approximately 9,000-12,000 JPY for the car ferry or around $205-$348 for passenger tickets (USD equivalent will vary with exchange rates). The New Camellia departs Busan in the evening and arrives in Fukuoka the following morning.
