Shanghai is well-served by two primary airports: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) for international arrivals and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) primarily for domestic and regional flights. The city also has major railway stations, including Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, which is a key hub for high-speed rail, and Shanghai Railway Station, both offering extensive connections across China.
By Air:
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG):: This airport is the main gateway for international travelers. From PVG to the city center, the Maglev train offers the fastest transfer, taking approximately 8 minutes to Longyang Road Metro Station, costing around CNY 50-80 (USD 7-11). Alternatively, Metro Line 2 connects directly to key city areas, with a journey time of about 65-70 minutes for approximately CNY 7-8 (USD 1-1.20). Taxis are also readily available, typically taking 45 minutes and costing around CNY 170-240 (USD 24-33) to downtown during the day.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA):: Primarily serving domestic routes, SHA is closer to the city center. Metro Lines 10 and 2 connect the airport to downtown in about 45 minutes for around CNY 5 (USD 0.70). A taxi ride from SHA to the city center generally takes 40 minutes and costs approximately CNY 80-100 (USD 11-14).
By Train:
High-speed trains provide efficient travel to and from major Chinese cities. For example, a high-speed train journey from Beijing to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station can take between 4.5 to 5.5 hours. Second-class tickets are approximately USD 92, while first-class tickets can be around USD 147. Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai Railway Station are well-integrated with the city's metro system for onward travel.
By Bus:
Long-distance bus services connect Shanghai with numerous surrounding cities. The Intercity Bus Terminal, near Shanghai Railway Station, is a major hub. Travel times and costs vary significantly by destination, for instance, a bus to Hangzhou takes 2.5-4 hours and costs CNY 80-130 (USD 11-18), and to Suzhou, 1.5-3 hours for CNY 40-100 (USD 5.5-14).
