Puerto Escondido is served by the Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), handling both national and international air traffic. The town also has an ADO bus terminal for regional ground transportation.
By Air:
Direct flights arrive at Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) from cities such as Mexico City (approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 28 minutes via Aeromexico, Volaris, VivaAerobus), Guadalajara (approximately 1 hour 39 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes via Volaris, VivaAerobus), and Monterrey (approximately 2 hours via VivaAerobus).
United Airlines offers direct flights from Houston, typically taking around 2 hours 44 minutes. American Airlines will also launch nonstop service from Dallas-Fort Worth starting December 3, operating twice weekly.
Flight costs can range from approximately $200-$227 USD for a round trip.
Taxis from the airport to town generally cost around $10 USD, while shared vans (colectivos) are about $2 USD.
By Bus from Oaxaca City:
The new Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway, opened in early 2024, has reduced travel time between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido significantly to approximately 2.5 to 4 hours.
Major bus companies, including ADO and OCC, operate this route.
One-way tickets typically cost between $17-30 USD (300-500 Mexican Pesos).
It is important to note that some reports from early 2025 indicate potential ADO bus delays of 7-8 hours due to local protests blocking access to the new highway, though other current information suggests the shorter travel times are common.
By Shared Van (Colectivo) from Oaxaca City:
Shared vans offer a journey of about 3-4 hours via the new highway.
A one-way ticket costs approximately $15-17 USD (300 Mexican Pesos).
These vans tend to run more frequently and are generally less affected by protests that might impact larger buses, though they offer less comfort and no onboard restrooms compared to ADO buses.
By Rental Car:
Car rental services are available directly at Puerto Escondido International Airport, with companies such as Hertz, Europcar, Mex, Fox, and Dollar.
Daily rental costs for an economy car average around $26-30 USD, but this price typically does not include mandatory Mexican car insurance, which must be purchased separately.
Renting a car from Oaxaca City and driving to Puerto Escondido takes approximately 3-4 hours via the new highway, with daily rental rates around $35 USD (excluding gas).
By Private Transfer from Oaxaca City:
Private transfers are available, costing approximately $300 USD for up to three passengers, with a travel time of around 3-4 hours.
