La Fortuna, Costa Rica, does not have its own international airport or major train station. Transportation within the area primarily relies on local bus services, and shuttle pick-up and drop-off points. A small domestic airport (FON) serves the region for flights to and from other parts of Costa Rica.
From San José (Juan Santamaría International Airport - SJO or downtown San José):
Shared Shuttles:: These services offer a convenient door-to-door experience from your hotel or SJO Airport. They typically cost around $50-$70 per person and the journey usually takes 3 to 4 hours. Most companies operate two departures daily, generally in the morning and early afternoon.
Private Shuttles:: For maximum flexibility and comfort, private shuttles are available from SJO Airport or San José hotels. Costs range from approximately $170 to $350 per group, with a travel time of about 2 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. This option is ideal for families or larger groups.
Public Bus:: The most economical way to travel, a direct bus from San José's Terminal 7-10 to La Fortuna costs about $6-$7 and takes approximately 3-5 hours. Direct services are limited, often running once or twice daily. Indirect routes via Ciudad Quesada or San Ramón are more frequent but involve transfers and can cost $10-$15, taking 4-5 hours or more. Tickets are typically purchased in cash from the driver.
Rental Car:: Renting a car provides significant freedom to explore at your own pace. Daily rental costs can range from $30-$100, plus insurance and fuel. The drive typically takes 2-3 hours. It is advisable to avoid driving long distances at night, especially on curvy, unlit roads. Many major rental companies have offices at SJO Airport.
Domestic Flight:: The quickest option is a short domestic flight from SJO to La Fortuna (FON), taking approximately 30 minutes in the air. This is generally the most expensive mode of transport.
From Liberia (Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport - LIR):
Shared Shuttles:: Shared shuttle services provide a comfortable door-to-door transfer from LIR Airport or Liberia hotels. Costs are around $43-$65 per person, with a travel time of approximately 3 to 4 hours. Daily departures are usually available in the morning and afternoon.
Private Shuttles:: Private transfers offer direct service from LIR Airport or your accommodation at your chosen time. Expect to pay between $185-$300 per group, with a journey duration of about 3 to 4 hours. This service is convenient for late arrivals or groups.
Public Bus:: This is the cheapest method, costing around $5-$15, but it is also the most time-consuming and complex option, requiring multiple transfers. There is no direct bus; the journey typically involves routes via Cañas and Tilarán, taking 4.5 to 7 hours.
Rental Car:: Renting a car from LIR Airport allows for independent travel, costing approximately $40-$70 per day, plus insurance and fuel. The drive to La Fortuna is typically 2.5 to 3 hours. Driving at night is not recommended.
Domestic Flight:: A domestic flight from LIR to La Fortuna (FON) is the fastest way, taking about 30 minutes in the air and costing around $150 per person one-way.
