How to get around Zimbabwe
Navigating Zimbabwe is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
Travelling between cities in Zimbabwe offers a range of options, varying in cost and comfort. For the most economical journeys, public buses and minibuses (locally known as 'kombis') are widely used. Government-run ZUPCO buses are very affordable, with fares starting around $0.30, but can be crowded. Private bus companies like CAG Tours, City Link, and Extra City provide more comfortable, scheduled services.
For instance, a bus journey from Harare to Bulawayo typically costs around $15, while Harare to Victoria Falls is approximately $25. For faster travel, domestic flights are available, connecting major hubs such as Harare, Victoria Falls, and Bulawayo. Airlines like Air Zimbabwe and Fastjet operate these routes, though prices are considerably higher, often starting from $170 for a one-way ticket.
Private transfers or shuttle services offer flexibility and comfort at a higher price point, with costs varying based on distance and passenger count; for example, a transfer from Kasane to Victoria Falls can be around $80.
Travel Within Cities
Within Zimbabwean cities, transport options cater to different budgets. The most budget-friendly choice is often the local minibuses (kombis), with rides costing between $0.50 and $1 in cities like Harare. These are readily available but can be overcrowded and do not operate on fixed schedules.
Government-operated ZUPCO buses offer another inexpensive public transport solution, with fares beginning at about $0.30. Taxis are a more convenient, though costlier, option. Fares are typically negotiated before the journey, as meters are not always used.
A typical 5km taxi ride in Harare costs approximately $12.50. From Harare Airport to the city center, taxi fares average between $25 and $28.40. In Victoria Falls, short taxi rides, such as from a hotel to the city center, are around $5.
Ride-hailing apps like Vaya Africa, Hwindi, Bolt, and InDrive are also available in major cities like Harare, providing a reliable and often safer alternative to street taxis.
