How to get around The Gambia
Navigating The Gambia is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
For traveling between cities in The Gambia, the most common and budget-friendly options are Gelly-Gellys (shared minibuses) and bush taxis (shared cars). These are widely used by locals and are considerably cheaper than private taxis. A journey from Brikama to Kwinella (Tendaba Camp) could cost around 150 Dalasi, while Kudang to Basse Santa Su is about 200 Dalasi.
The Gambia Transport Service Corporation (GTSC) operates single-decker buses on major routes, such as from Kanifing Bus Station to Basse Santa Su, with 'Super Express' services offering comfortable seats and air conditioning for around £5 to Janjanbureh.
Ferry services are available for crossing the River Gambia at various points, with the Banjul-Barra route being the busiest. A foot passenger ticket for the Banjul-Barra ferry costs 25 Dalasi, and a vehicle costs 800 Dalasi. Organized tours for intercity travel can be more expensive, averaging around $219 USD per day.
Travel Within Cities
Within cities, shared taxis and Gelly-Gellys (minibuses) are the most economical way to travel. A short ride within Serekunda or from Bakau to Fajara typically costs around 10 Dalasi.
Shared taxis are easily identified by their yellow number plates, and the fare for a route is generally 12 Dalasi. For example, a shared taxi from Senegambia to the Traffic Light area or Serekunda would cost about 10-12 Dalasi.
Private taxis are also available, often recognizable by their green or yellow colors, and offer 'town trip' services. These are more expensive, and prices should be negotiated in advance. A 5km private taxi ride could be around 300 Dalasi, with an additional 300 Dalasi per hour for waiting time. Airport transfers by taxi to tourist areas typically range from 500 to 800 Dalasi.
