How to get around Rwanda
Navigating Rwanda is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.
Inter-City Travel
Traveling between cities in Rwanda is typically done via express buses, offering a balance of comfort, speed, and affordability. These buses have largely replaced shared taxis on major routes.
A 3-hour journey, such as from Kigali to Kibuye, can cost approximately 2,500 RWF (around $2.54). Bus ticket prices generally range from $1 to $10, depending on the distance and bus class. For longer routes, fares can vary, with examples from 2019 showing prices between 730 RWF and 6,780 RWF, and more recent adjustments in March 2024 added 50-100 RWF to upcountry routes.
Travel Within Cities
Within Rwandan cities, particularly Kigali, a variety of transport options are available, catering to different budgets. The most economical and widely used method is the motorcycle taxi, known as a 'moto'. Moto fares typically range from 300 RWF ($0.32) for short trips and rarely exceed 1,200 RWF (about $1.30). Fares are set with smart meters, costing 117 RWF per kilometer after an initial 400 RWF for the first two kilometers.
For tourists, prices can sometimes be negotiated, usually starting from 500 RWF to 1,000 RWF, or up to 3,000 RWF for longer distances. City buses provide an excellent and affordable alternative, with fares usually under 500 RWF ($0.50) per ride. For frequent travel, daily unlimited passes are available for 600 RWF, weekly for 5,000 RWF, and monthly for 10,000 RWF.
Car taxis are a more expensive option, with an average city ride costing around 15,000 RWF ($15.25). Ride-hailing apps also offer a convenient way to book taxis. For those preferring self-drive, car rentals vary from $37 to $250 per day, depending on the vehicle type, with an additional cost of $30-$50 daily if a driver is hired.
