Navigating Ghana is straightforward with a variety of public and private transport options. Here's what you need to know about getting between and within its cities and towns.

Inter-City Travel

Traveling across Ghana offers several options, varying in cost and speed. For budget-conscious journeys, public buses operated by companies like State Transport Corporation (STC) and VIP are reliable choices. A four-hour trip from Accra to Cape Coast typically costs around GHC 85.

For longer routes, such as Accra to Kumasi, STC fares range from GHS 85.00 to GHS 120.00, while VIP standard coaches are around GHC 100.00 and executive coaches GHC 120.00. Traveling from Accra to Tamale can cost approximately GHC 240.00 with STC or VIP. Similarly, Accra to Takoradi is about GHS 95.00 to GHS 105.00.

These bus journeys, while affordable, can take significant time. For instance, Accra to Tamale is a 10-hour trip.

For faster travel, domestic flights are available, though they are considerably more expensive. A one-way flight from Accra to Kumasi can range from GHS 1200 to GHS 1600 (approximately USD 90-110), while Accra to Tamale is GHS 1200 to GHS 2000 (approximately USD 90-130).

Flights from Accra to Takoradi are about GHS 1100 to GHS 1500 (approximately USD 70-100). Overall, one-way domestic flights can start from GHC 700 (around USD 60), with return flights costing between USD 100 and USD 150.

The most convenient, but most expensive, option for inter-regional travel is hiring a private car with a driver, which typically costs US$100 to US$150 per day, plus fuel.

Travel Within Cities

Within Ghanaian cities, various transport methods cater to different budgets. The most economical way to navigate is by 'tro-tro,' which are shared minibuses. A short 30-minute ride often costs GHC 4 to GHC 8.5, though prices can vary by route. Tro-tros are generally packed and may not have air conditioning, but they are highly accessible.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber, Bolt, and Yango offer a more comfortable and often cheaper alternative to traditional taxis. These services are prevalent in major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. A 10-30 minute ride typically ranges from GHC 14 (approximately $1.2) to GHC 65 (approximately $5.6). Drivers usually prefer cash payments.

Traditional taxis are widely available but tend to be more expensive than ride-hailing apps, as they are not metered and require fare negotiation. A typical short trip within a city can cost between $3 and $5, or GHC 7-10 within Accra, potentially reaching GHC 15. Shared taxis also operate on fixed routes, similar to tro-tros, and can be a cheaper option than private taxi hires.

In some northern cities, particularly Tamale, 'tuk-tuks' (also known as 'yellow yellows') provide an efficient and inexpensive way to travel.
